A Great Spirit: The Sleeping Giant of Thunder Bay Returns
Ritchie “Stardreamer” Sinclair
Acrylic and iridescent copper on six canvas panels, 60″ x 216″, 2008
“A Great Spirit: The Sleeping Giant of Thunder Bay Returns”, was created as a memorial tribute to honour Norval Morrisseau. In this painting we witness the Shaman in ceremonial repose taking part in an ancestral rite that celebrates his legacy and the return of his sacred spirit to source. This procession features a grand canoe that reflects his nobility of character and profound significance as an artist, teacher and visionary leader. Imagery of various lifeforms, spirit-animals and symbolic content displayed throughout recollect experiences that the two artists shared while painting side-by-side over the years.
